Homeopathic treatment can help deal with a variety of men's health issues, from prostate problems (using remedies such as Sabal Serrulata) to high blood pressure (Baryta muriatica) and angina (Crataegus or cactus). There are many homeopathic remedies for common stress-induced symptoms, such as Lycopodium for irritable bowel syndrome.
Here I profile a remedy frequently used for functional problems caused by tension, and show how taking it helped one man re balance his life.
The key theme of the Nux vomica remedy pattern is a stressed response to the challenges they set themselves. People stuck in the energy pattern corresponding to Nux vomica feel overstretched and anxious about their ability to acheive their goals. They are hard-working and initially thrive on pressure, but, after a time, they become overstressed.
They live off their nerves, in a state of adrenaline which creates heightened sensitivity to noise and external stimulation. Noise can irritate them intensely. Their state of adrenaline often causes sleep problems: they wake in the early hours of the morning feeling wide awake and making lists of things to be done, sometimes giving up on sleep in order to pack more into the day. Otherwise they can lie awake for hours feeling overloaded, anxious and churning over their problems.
They are type A personalities: intense, driven, and goal oriented. They are usually very good at what they do, but are often perfectionist and find it difficult to delegate. Other people may not be able to live up to their high expectations, and they can be intolerant of those they consider less capable. They over- identify themselves with work and are ambitious and competitive.
People stuck in the energy pattern of this remedy usually have problems with anger. They may not always express their anger, holding it inside and describing themselves as seething under the surface. Their anger can erupt like a volcano at any slight provocation, a sign that they have been suppressing resentful feelings for some time.
Tony, aged 50, came in complaining of a feeling of energy collapse. He needed to drink lots of coffee in the morning to get going. The problem with using coffee or other stimulants in this way is that they can mask chronic exhaustion. The buzz produced by coffee does not come from real energy, but from a caffeine-induced adrenaline state.
He had been diagnosed with viral labyrinthitis, which affects the balance mechanism inside the ear and had left him weaving his way down the road. 'I've never felt so ill in my life.' Four years previously, he had also developed testicular cancer, and one testicle was removed. He had been tremendously anxious about it at the time, but was not aware of worrying about a recurrence at the time he consulted me.
In general he was very stressed and wound up. He habitually worked up to 12 hours a day running his own company. A perfectionist, he was unable to delegate things. High levels of energy enabled him to drive himself hard, but his body was complaining. He held a tremendous level of tension in his body. His shoulders seized up regularly, and he also suffered from headaches and dizzy spells. He saw black spots in his visual field every time he turned his head, and had started to experience deafness in one ear, which was apparently caused by irritation of the nerve.
He tried to control his physical tension by playing lots of squash in a frenetic, combative manner. He was usually competitive: everything he did had to be done with as much gusto as possible. 'I put everything into everything I do.' The down side of living at this pitch of intensity was that he was frightened of his bottled-up energy. He felt that he might hurt other people, and that made him try to bottle it up even more. 'I can be seething inside, and then eventually I just explode and get really angry.'
Tony had a fast metabolism, which kept him slim and warm, with easy perspiration. He described himself as quick-tempered; he was selfish, intolerant, and at times aggressive. He was unable to accept others' points of view. 'I don't suffer fools gladly.' But he was also hard on himself. He definitely needed approval and described himself as bashful and unable to accept praise, because he was unaccustomed to receiving any as a child.
Once he had taken a single dose of his remedy, he immediately relaxed and his pace slowed down, which did not seem to irritate him. He gave up drinking coffee and went back to playing tennis twice a week. He complained of a lack of the old adrenaline state on the tennis courts. He was no longer waking at 6 a.m. with a racing brain. He noticed that his energy was much better in phases, coming and going unevenly over the course of a day.
He still felt he had a slight temperature, with loose bowels, and was plagued by muscle tension. The physical symptoms became more intense for a few days after the remedy: he felt extremely hot and more exhausted. But, within a week of taking the Nux vomica, his energy was very good, and he was sleeping a lot better. He said that he no longer felt crippled by anxieties over cash flow problems in the business. He had used to feel stress in his stomach, producing the indigestion symptoms of dyspepsia. After the remedy he experienced far fewer griping pains in the stomach, and his bowel movements became firmer.
His control issues were definitely improving, and he was more able to delegate. For the first time in years, he decided to take time off work for a holiday. The excruciating tension in his body eased up at the same time as he stopped pushing himself beyond the limits of his endurance, both physically and psychologically.
What To Expect as the Constitutional Treatment Works
After taking the appropriate remedy indicated by your own symptom pattern , there is usually a tremendous improvement in levels of energy. Stress related symptoms clear up rapidly. As tension is released you feel more able to relax. You feel less tense and hurried. You are more able to be effective without having to drive yourself. As the pace of life slows down, you can once again appreciate the beauty of simple pleasures. You no longer feel like a coiled up spring. Your irritability disappears along with your nervous tension.
Pent up anger and irritability evaporate, leaving you more able to interact with others in a calmer and more engaged manner. You realize that you are not the only one good enough to do what needs to be done. Other people have their own capabilities and gifts and you realize you can make space to allow them to contribute a different perspective. Despite ceding control, you retain a sense of resolve in your own purpose, but you no longer miss out on life's pleasures because you are too narrowly focused on achieving the goal that you have set yourself.
